IUP Continues Offensive Surge with 5-2 Win over Bellarmine in Non-Conference Action

Freshman Danielle Edwards got the Crimson Hawk offense rolling with her first career goal

Boxscore

Danielle Edwards, Erin Shirk (Paradise/Pequea Valley) and Shannon Sullivan (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) scored in a span of eight minutes in the first half to stake IUP to a 3-0 lead en route to a 5-2 victory over Bellarmine in a non-conference game Sunday at a rainy Miller Stadium.

The Crimson Hawks scored five goals for the second time in as many games over the weekend to even their record at 4-4. The Knights saw their undefeated run end after nine wins to open the season.

After winning by the same score Saturday at Mercyhurst, IUP wasted little time finding the cage again against the Knights. Edwards scored her first career goal with 10 minutes gone in the first half, with the assist going to Shannon Sullivan (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny). Shirk made it 2-0 at the 16:43 mark and Sullivan scored just over a minute later, assisted by Anouk Sickman (Antwerp, Belgium/Lazac Cellepe).

But the Knights bounced back to score with 8:43 left in the first half on a goal by Rachael McAllister and then trimmed their deficit to 3-2 in the early stages of the second half when Ellen West put one in.

It stayed a one-goal game until Kacie Klotz (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton) scored with 24:31 remaining, and Sullivan added her second goal of the day and fifth of the season with five minutes left, assisted by Jillian Duld (Allentown/Parkland). Sullivan scored two goals in both games over the weekend.

IUP outshot Bellarmine 22-11 and created 18 penalty corners, including 13 in the second half when the Crimson Hawks dominated play for most of the final 35 minutes. Lydia Dolly (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) made five saves for IUP, and Samantha Biedron stopped seven shots for the Knights.

IUP is back in action Saturday with a road trip to Kutztown.
