Julian Sanders (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) hit five 3-pointers including one with 19 seconds remaining in the game to preserve a 74-68 win over Kutztown in PSAC crossover action Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field House.
Sanders moved up to second on the all-time list with 198 3-pointers passing Geoff Evans. He is 89 behind Jason Bullock for the top spot. Sanders finished the game with 15 points.
Willi Estrella (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Escuela sto Hermano Miguel) posted a double-double, the third of his career, with 18 points on a perfect 6 of 6 from the field and grabbed 10 rebounds. Estrella recorded a double-double in the last meeting between the two teams in last season's PSAC championship game.
Ashton Smith (Scarborough, ON/West Hill Collegiate) tallied 13 points, pulled down eight boards and dished out five assists. The five helpers tied Smith with Bullock for 11th in school history with 293.
Kevin Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Academy Park) chipped in 13 points off the bench and added five assists including the pass to Sanders on the game clinching 3-pointer.
Scooter Renkin (Midlothian, VA/Blue Ridge) also reached double figures for the Crimson Hawks with 10 points and three dimes.
Darryl Webb (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) scored only five points, but he grabbed 11 rebounds to make him the first player in school-history to reach 1,000. He also contributed a career-high six assists and blocked four shots adding to his school record.
The Crimson Hawks built their largest lead of the game 54-41, at the 13:15 mark, after starting the second half on a 20-10 run.
The Golden Bears answered with an 18-6 run that started at 12:11 on a 3-pointer by Devin McBride, who scored all eight of his points in the run, and cut the IUP lead to 60-59 with just 5:40 left on the clock.
IUP trailed 31-25 at the 5:46 mark in the first half after Eric Brennan hit a runner in the lane. The Crimson Hawks scored the next seven points to take a 34-31 lead into the half.
Tamir Johnson paced Kutztown with a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds.
IUP is now 10-2 in crossover games in the past three seasons and 3-1 in crossover action this year. They have won 38 of their last 40 games at Memorial Field House including the current 28 game winning streak.
The Crimson Hawks host Gannon Wednesday night at 7:30 in the PSAC West opener for both teams.
