SHIPPENSBURG, PA - Despite an excellent performance in goal by Brittany Varacallo (New Britain/Central Bucks South), the IUP field hockey team's postseason run came to an end Friday when they lost to No. 1 Bloomsburg in the semifinals of the 2011 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament by a score of 6-0.

Bloomsburg took an immediate advantage, scoring three goals in the first 11 minutes of the game. Brooke Simonovich knocked in a loose ball at the 2:12 mark to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead, and Amanda Riley made it 2-0 at 9:52. Just over a minute later Nicole Bruce took a beautiful pass from Brittany Mathews and deposited the goal. Jenna DiSabitino and Alexis Weber added goals late in the first half to give Bloomsburg a 5-0 lead at the break.

IUP had chances to score in the second half and was kept in the game thanks to great goaltending by Varacallo, who had two saves and allowed just one goal in 35 minutes of action. The second half goal for Bloomsburg was scored by Felicia Domenici with under three minutes to play in the game.

The Crimson Hawks finished the season with a record of 12-7, 7-3 in the PSAC West. Head Coach Gary Agard led IUP to a winning record for the first time since 2008. Anouk Sickman (Antwerp, Belgium/Lazac Cellepe) finished the season with a team-high 17 goals and nine assists, while Shannon Sullivan (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) finished with 14 goals and seven assists. Varacallo and Sarah Lemieux (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) split time in goal in every game this season and both had goals against averages under four.
