The Crimson Hawks used a balanced attack to come up with an 87-80 victory over Clarion at Tippin Gym avenging a loss earlier in the season to the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles (15-9, 5-7 PSAC West) led 80-79 with :43 remaining after a Paul McQueen 3-pointer, but the Crimson Hawks (18-5, 9-2) scored the next eight points all from the free throw line to grab the win.
After
Darryl Webb (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) was fouled with :26 to play Bud Teer was assessed a technical foul giving the Crimson Hawks four free throws. Webb connected on both free throw and
Kevin Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Academy Park) made one of two. After IUP inbounded the ball Stewart was fouled and made both free throws to make the score 84-80.
Trailing 71-64 with 5:28 to play IUP used 12-2 run including six points from Webb. Webb finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds his 12 double-double of the season and the 50th of his career. Webb also added to his school-record with three blocked shots.
With 2:04 to play in the first half Clarion started a 13-0 to take a 42-33 starting the second half. The Crimson Hawks responded with a 17-4 run of their own, getting six points from
Willi Estrella (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Escuela sto Hermano Miguel).
IUP led 56-53 with 12:57 after a pair of free throws by
Ashton Smith (Scarborough, ON/West Hill Collegiate). Clarion answered with an 18-8 run including 10 points from Jamar Harrison.
Kevin Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Academy Park) scored a career-high 17 points on 12 of 14 shooting from the free throw line. He also dished out a career high eight assists and had five steals.
Estrella finished the game with 16 points on 7 of 9 shooting and pulled down five rebounds.
Julian Sanders (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) chipped in 15 points including three 3-pointers.
Smith added 15 points and moved within 38 points of becoming the 27th player in IUP history to reach the 1,000 point mark. Smith added four helpers and three rebounds.
Lloyd Harrison scored a game-high 27 points and Lamar Harrison scored 24 to lead the Golden Eagle offense.
IUP had lost two in a row against Clarion and avenged a 73-68 on January 22 and the two of IUP's three losses in conference play.
The Crimson Hawks take a five-game win streak on the road when they travel to Lock Haven for a makeup game with Lock Haven Monday at Lock Haven.
