Crimson Hawks Cruise Past California in PSAC Action

The Crimson Hawks jumped out early en route to an 80-52 victory over California Wednesday night at Memorial Field House.

Darryl Webb (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) paced the IUP offense with 22 points one game after breaking the school's scoring record on Saturday. Webb also grabbed five boards and added two assists.

Willi Estrella (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Escuela sto Hermano Miguel) chipped in 16 points and six rebounds. Scooter Renkin (Midlothian, VA/Blue Ridge) also reached double figures for the Crimson Hawks with 12 points to go with five dimes and four steals.

Steve Swiech led Cal with a double-double, scoring 22 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. Chad Tipton was the only other Vulcan to reach double figures with 12 points.

The teams traded baskets to open the game before IUP took control. The Crimson Hawks went on 19-5 run to open the lead up to 21-7.

The Crimson Hawks took a 37-23 lead into the half and picked up right where they left off in the second half. IUP extended the lead to 69-32 with a 10:01 to play after a 33-9 run.

This is IUP's sixth straight win over Cal the most since it won nine straight from the 1971-72 season through 75-76. It was also the Crimson Hawks 100th win in the series.

IUP shot 5 of 15 from beyond the arc in the game. That marks the 500th consecutive game with a 3-pointer.

The Crimson Hawks travel to Slippery Rock Saturday for a PSAC West showdown.
