Nafee Harris Wins Fourth Long Jump National Championship; Leander Toney Edged Out for High Jump Title

Leander Toney set a school record in the high jump

Nafee Harris won his fourth long jump national championship and Leander Toney was edged out for the title in the high jump on the first day of the NCAA indoor track and field meet in Albuquerque, N.M.

Brianna Liebold was the third IUP athlete in action on Friday, finishing sixth in the long jump to also gain All-America status.

Harris added to his national titles in the 2009 outdoor and 2010 indoor and outdoor meets with a jump of 25 feet, 2 ½ inches. He took the lead in the third round and was never threatened, posting a jump of 10 inches longer than runner-up Aaron Hill of Grand Canyon.

This is the fifth time Harris made the All-America team in the long jump and sixth time overall during his standout college career. He was fifth in the long jump at the 2009 indoor meet and was a member of IUP's 4 x 100 relay team that took eighth at the 2009 outdoor championships.

Toney broke his own IUP indoor record by one inch when he cleared the bar at 7-0 ½ and matched the height of Corey Thomas of Stonehill and Edward Dudley of Lake Erie. But Thomas claimed the title on the basis of fewer misses during the competition.

This is the third time Toney has been an All-American, adding to his fourth-place finish at both the 2010 indoor and outdoor meets.

Liebold had a jump of 18-10 ½ to become a two-time All-American while at IUP. She was third in the same event at last winter's indoor meet. Liebold will be back in action on Saturday when she competes in the triple jump.
