MANSFIELD, TX - IUP senior
Jackie Hynson (King George, VA/King George) broke the NCAA Division II record in the 200 yard butterfly on Friday evening en route to a national title in the event at the 2012 NCAA Division II Swimming Championships at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium in Texas.
Hynson swam a 1:58.84 in the event, inching ahead of second place Amanda Thomas of Southern Connecticut by :00.27.
Thomas raced out to a lead on the first lap :26.17 to :27.22, extending her lead over Hynson after lap two, :56.11 to :57.63. Hynson then came storming back with a time of :29.92 in the third lap, closing the gap to just :00.17 heading into the final lap. She then kept up the momentum, outracing Thomas :31.29 to :31.73 for the exciting win.
The victory is the first national champion under IUP head coach
Chris Villa, who has been with the program since the 2006-07 season.
The win also gives Hynson her third All-American honor of the week, finishing fifth in the 200 IM on Wednesday and sixth in the 100 fly on Thursday.
Hynson finished third in the 200 fly last year at the NCAA championships, breaking the IUP and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference records in the event with a time of 2:00.85. Earlier in the day Hynson raced to a time of 2:00.15 in the prelims, breaking the re-breaking the IUP and PSAC records before her outstanding performance in the finals.
Also competing on Friday were
Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and Steve Long, who swam in the prelims of the 100 breast and 200 fly, respectively. Both Mitidieri and Long finished 18th in their respective events, failing to advance to the finals.
The championships wrap up Saturday as Hynson gets back in the pool to compete in the 200 back while Mitidieri swims the 200 breast.
