WEST CHESTER, PA – Despite three goals and an assist from
Alexa Lodovici (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional), the IUP women's lacrosse team fell to ninth-ranked West Chester by a score of 23-8 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action Saturday.
The Crimson Hawks an early advantage in the game when Lodovici scored off of a
Brenna Gallagher (Evans City/Seneca Valley) assist just two minutes into the game, but the lead would be shortlived. The Golden Rams ripped off three straight goals in just two minutes of action to take an early 3-1 lead.
After
Colleen Berlin (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) scored on a free position shot to pull IUP within one, West Chester would score three more goals to take a 6-2 lead with just over 13 minutes to play in the first half. IUP would keep it close when Lodovici netted a goal to trim the lead to three less than a minute later, but West Chester would respond is a big way.
The Golden Rams broke the game wide open with 12 consecutive goals to take a commanding 18-3 lead. The 12-0 run spanned over 14 minutes of game time and stretched well into the second half.
IUP would try to claw back into the game in the second period when
Stephanie Bianco (King of Prussia/Upper Merion),
Jessica Beck (Baltimore, MD/Western Tech) and Michelle Zakrewski all scored to cut the lead down to 12, but West Chester would add a pair of goals to take a 20-6 lead with 16:22 to play in the game.
The Crimson Hawks would make final attempt at a comeback when Lodovici and Bianco tallied back-to-back goals with just over 10 minutes to play, but the Golden Rams would tack on three late goals to seal the 23-8 win.
Lodovici finished with three goals and an assist on just three shots, while Bianco chipped in two goals. Berlin added a goal and two assists, while Beck and Zakrewski both scored for IUP. Chelsea Hipp played the entire game in goal for the Crimson Hawks and tallied five saves.
With the loss, IUP falls to 10-5, 6-4 in the PSAC. The Crimson Hawks wrap up the regular season this Thursday when they host Lock Haven at Miller Stadium. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
