Strong Second Half Propels IUP to Win Over Lindenwood

Paige Mosner's second half goal proved to be the difference Sunday
Box Score

LOUISVILLE, KY - Defense was once again on display Sunday as the IUP field hockey team allowed just one goal for the second straight day in a 2-1 win over Lindenwood. The IUP back line was marvelous all afternoon, allowing just three Lindenwood shots on goal.

After a scoreless first half, the Crimson Hawks finally broke through at the 53:52 mark when Brielle Mackey (Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) redirected a Dani Edwards (Milford/Delaware Valley) penalty corner to give IUP a 1-0 lead.

The Crimson Hawks would extend their lead to two less than three minutes later when Paige Mosner (Newton, NJ/Newton) knocked in a rebound off the Lindenwood goalie for her first goal of the season.

The Lions would cut the lead in half just moments later when Kristi O'Connor scored on a penalty stroke, but the IUP defense would once again hold firm down the stretch to secure the Crimson Hawks first win of the 2012 season.

As a team, IUP outshot Lindenwood 20-5, including a flurry of 14 second half shots while limiting the Lions to just two. Anouk Sickman (Antwerp, Belgium/Lazac Cellepe) had four shots on goal for the Crimson Hawks, while Nicole Bruce (Clarks Summit/Lackawanna Trail) added three shots at the net. IUP Goalkeepers Sarah Lemieux (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) and Brittany Varacallo (New Britain/Central Bucks South) each played a half in the cage and combined for a pair of saves.

The Crimson Hawks will return home on Wednesday, September 5 when they begin PSAC play against Mercyhurst. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
