Field Hockey Ends Season with Loss to Bloomsburg in PSAC Quarterfinals

Box Score

BLOOMSBURG, PA – The IUP field hockey season came to an end on Tuesday when the Crimson Hawks fell to Bloomsburg 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.

Both defenses came to play as neither team could get off a shot until Bloomsburg had one blocked nearly 19 minutes into the game.

Jessica Kida tried on the other end for the Crimson Hawks a few minutes later, but her attempt was stopped by the Huskies' Megan Eppley in the cage.

The Huskies took their lead with less than five minutes to go in the half when Samantha Facciolla charged down the middle and passed it to Laura Gerhard who deposited it into the cage.

IUP had a good chance to tie less than two minutes into the second half when a shot by Kendra Blantz (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) got passed Eppley but was saved by Gabby Nisiotis. The Crimson Hawks then had another chance just seconds later with a penalty stroke, but Casey McGowan (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South)'s attempt was saved by Eppley and Bloomsburg escaped unscathed.

The Huskies tacked on an insurance goal with less than 12 minutes to go when Sam Peters deflected one in after three Bloomsburg penalty corners in three minutes.

Bloomsburg held the advantage in shots at 8-3. Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exeter ) went the entire way in the cage for the Crimson Hawks and collected two saves. The Huskies also had eight penalty corners compared to IUP's four.

The Crimson Hawks end their season with an 8-11 overall record and a 5-5 mark in the PSAC. They started the season 1-6 but a late season charge – winning five of their last six – including a 1-0 upset win over Millersville, earned IUP the fifth seed in the PSAC championships.
