Crimson Hawks Nearly Pull Upset in Defensive Gem at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, PA – The Crimson Hawks held sixth-ranked Lock Haven to just three goals in the second half but it was enough to squeak by the 13th-ranked Crimson Hawks as IUP fell 10-9 on Tuesday night.

It was a tight battle all night long in a game that featured two leads by each team and four ties.

The score was knotted at 7-7 in a first half that included 3-0 runs by each team.

Lock Haven grabbed a 9-7 lead in the second half with two goals in the first 12 minutes of play as both defenses appeared to tighten up.

Sarah Ward (Murrysville/Franklin Regional ) made it a one goal game at the 16:45 mark before the Bald Eagles again made it a two-goal difference just 35 seconds later. Ward then assisted on a Colleen Berlin (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) goal less than 20 seconds later to finish off a four-goal run in 1:59 to cut Lock Haven's lead to 10-9.

That's when both defenses locked down, giving up a combined five shots in the final 15 minutes of action, three from IUP and two from Lock Haven. Both teams also combined to force nine turnovers in those final 15 minutes as the last shot of the game came with 2:57 on the clock.

The loss was the second in a row for the Crimson Hawks as they fall to 11-2 overall and 8-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Lock Haven improves to 13-1 and 10-0 in the conference, locking up home field advantage in the PSAC tournament.

Ward gave IUP the first lead of the game just 43 seconds into the game and IUP later took a 2-1 lead as Berlin threaded the net at the 25:37 mark. Lock Haven then reeled off three straight goals to take a 4-2 lead and later held a 6-3 advantage before goals by Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton), Alexa Lodovici (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) and Brittney Palardy (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall) tied the game at 6-6. A goal by both teams in the final 22 seconds led to the tie game at halftime.

Ward and Lodovici each tallied two goals and two assists while Berlin and Weinberg each scored a pair of goals.

The Crimson Hawks wrap up their regular season on Saturday as they host Gannon in what could be a preview of next week's PSAC quarterfinals. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
