Drew Hayden (Gibsonia/Pine Richland) scored a game-high four goals to power the IUP lacrosse team to a 19-10 win over Gannon in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament Tuesday.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks advance to the semifinal round this Friday against West Chester. Both semifinal matchups and the championship game will be played at top-seeded Lock Haven.
Hayden and
Colleen Berlin (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) each tallied a team-high four goals in the contest, while
Alexa Lodovici (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) posted a trio of goals and two assists.
IUP was hot from the opening draw Tuesday, netting the first eight goals of the contest to take a commanding 8-0 lead midway through the first half. Hayden and Berlin each had three goals in the run, while
Sarah Ward (Murrysville/Franklin Regional ) and
Alex Edwards (Bethlehem/Nazareth) also found the back of the net.
The Lady Knights would mount a mini-rally late in the period thanks to goals from Heather Vouros and Caitlyn Fisher, but a
Tara Nicholas (Germantown, MD/Northwest) goal would give the Crimson Hawks a 13-5 lead at the break.
IUP would salt away the win early in the second stanza, scoring the first three goals of the half to take an insurmountable 16-5 lead.
Chelsey Hipp (Clarksville, MD/Good Counsel) and
Kaitlin Sterling (Cranberry Twp./Seneca Valley) split time in the net for the Crimson Hawks, tallying a combined five saves.
Fisher led the way for Gannon with three goals on five shots, while Jess Fugate finished with two goals and an assist. The loss ends the season for the Lady Knights, who wrap up the 2013 campaign with a record of 10-8, 6-6 in the PSAC.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 13-2, 10-2 heading into Friday's showdown with the Golden Rams. IUP lost the first contest 15-8 at home. Gametime with West Chester is set for 4:00 p.m. from Lock Haven.
