CHARLESTON, WV – The pairing of Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) advanced to the semifinals and Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) got to the quarterfinals as the IUP women's tennis team competed in the 2013 ITA Atlantic Regionals at the University of Charleston.

McCormick and Schnaas won three matches and nearly pulled off an upset win over Alex Borgenhoff and Ramona Czakon from California in the semifinals. They started off with an 8-0 win over Molly Ballard and Taylor Youell in the round of 64 before defeating Jordan Kerns and Charlotte Sandy of West Virginia State 8-4.

In the quarterfinals, they found themselves down 7-4 to the West Liberty team of Lauren Howard and Raissa Wischi before reeling off five straight points for a 9-7 win to advance. The reverse happened in the next round, taking a 6-3 lead over Borgenhoff and Czakon in the semifinals but ended up falling 8-6.

The other two doubles teams of Butland and Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman), along with Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) and Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) advanced one match to the round of 16 during the weekend.

Butland was the only singles player to advance past the round of 16 as she won three matches this weekend. Her highlight win came in the round of 32 over fifth-seeded Lucie Rey of Cal, 6-7, 6-2, 1-0. She went on to defeat Marijana Gjorgjevska of Bluefield State 7-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals, eventually falling to Borgenhoff 6-0, 6-0.

She opened up the tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mallika Mali of Charleston in the opening round.

Mahto and and Schnaas each advanced to the round of 16 while McCormick and Wood advanced to the round of 16.

The Crimson Hawks are in action once more this fall, facing off in dual matches against Shippensburg and Bloomsburg on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Shippensburg.
