Box Score

NEWBERRY, SC – Jessica Kida tied an IUP single game record with four goals to help the No. 6 Crimson Hawks to an 18-1 season-opening victory over Newberry in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday.

The mark of four goals has been hit five previous times in school history, with the last time being by Brittany Owens against Bellarmine in 2008.

The 18 goals are the second most by an IUP team in school history, four short of the record of 22 against Washington & Jefferson in 2001.

Three of Kida's scores came in the first half, including IUP's first goal of the season just three minutes into the game. Less than six minutes later she made it a 2-0 lead with another goal before scores by Ashley Mosner (Newton, NJ/Newton), Sarah Zielinski (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) and Kate Bruce (Clarks Summit/Lackawanna Trail) made it 5-0 with eight minutes to go in the half.

Kida's third goal of the game was sandwiched in between scores by Haley Fidler (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) and Chelsea Wanamaker (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) at the end of the half as IUP went into the break with an 8-0 lead.

It took less than five minutes for the Crimson Hawks to take a 10-0 lead with Kida and Wanamaker netting two more. The scoring continued regularly with IUP holding a 17-0 lead before Newberry was able to get on the board.

The Crimson Hawks dominated all facets of the game, holding a 43-2 shot advantage while also out-cornering Newberry 7-2.

Zielinski started her collegiate career with three goals with Jillian Duld (Allentown/Parkland), Paige Mosner (Newton, NJ/Newton), Fidler and Wanamaker each adding two. Also scoring for the Crimson Hawks was Shauna Poling (Wescosville/Emmaus). Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exeter ) started in the cage for the Crimson Hawks, splitting time with Alyssa Lerda (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) in the near shutout.

IUP is back in action tomorrow, staying in South Carolina and facing off against Limestone at 4:00 p.m.
