WINTER PARK, FL – The doubles pair of
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) picked up an upset win but it could not propel the 44th-ranked IUP women's tennis team to a victory as the Crimson Hawks fell to ninth-ranked Rollins 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
Timko and McCormick defeated the duo of Elissa DeCampli and Ashley Rosenberg 8-4 at the No. 1 spot. That team finished the 2012-13 season ranked sixth in the South Region and 21st in Division II.
The rest of doubles play didn't go as planned, as Rollins took both matches.
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) lost 8-1 at No. 3 while
Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) and
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) lost 8-2 at No. 2.
Rollins was dominant in singles play, starting with a Shannon Etten 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 over McCormick. Schnaas fell to Ashley Lott 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and Wood lost to Emma Wookey 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5. Butland then lost at No. 3 to Taylor Brown 6-2, 6-2 before
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 to Katie Wookey and Timko lost to DeCampli 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1.
The loss was the first for the Crimson Hawks in their last five matches as they fall to 6-4 overall on the season. Rollins improves to 11-2 with the win.
The Crimson Hawks look for another chance to pick off a top 25 team tomorrow when they face No. 23 Tampa on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. It'll be the fourth and final match on IUP's trip to Florida. So far the Crimson Hawks are 2-1 on the trip.
