GREENSBURG, PA – The 44th-ranked IUP women's tennis team had three straight set singles victories as they blanked Seton Hill 9-0 in their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West opening match.
Those three victories came at the third, fourth and fifth spots, as
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School),
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) easily deposited their opponents with 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Also picking up wins in singles play were
Roxana Viviana Yeh (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Cangallo Schule),
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston). Yeh defeated Alisha Torretti 6-2, 6-1 at the sixth spot while McCormick won 6-2, 6-0 at the second. Timko faced a tougher challenge at number one, going to three sets but still posting a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Megan Hudak.
The Crimson Hawks began the match with back-to-back 8-0 wins in doubles action, including
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) teaming with Mahto at number three and Ericka Schnaas and Butland at number two. Timko and McCormick paired at number one for an 8-2 win over Hudak and Faith Finoli.
This was the Crimson Hawks second consecutive win as they improve to 4-3 overall and 2-3 this spring. The match was also the first PSAC West match for the Crimson Hawks as they start 1-0 in the division.
They return to the courts in two weeks when they travel south to play four matches over the course of five days in Florida. They'll start things off with Hillsborough Community College on March 16 in Tampa and will also face Minnesota State – Moorhead, Rollins and Tampa. Rollins is currently ranked ninth in the nation while Tamp is ranked 23rd.
