MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – On the strength of a combined 11 conference qualifying marks, the IUP men's and women's outdoor track & field teams both finished in third place as the Crimson Hawks competed in the Millersville Metrics on Saturday.
A total of nine athletes – six women and three men – earned those 11 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) marks, including two each by
Troy Zangaro (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Hills) and
Charles Wilson-Adams (Tyrone, Pa./Tyrone).
Zangaro doubled up in the 200 and 400 meters, earning second place finishes in both with times of 22.52 and 49.78, respectively. Wilson-Adams got his marks in the jumps, going for 1.95 meters in the high jump and 13.26 meters in the triple jump.
Jeremy Claypoole (Bellwood, Pa. /Bellwood-Antis) was another men's jumper to hit a qualifying mark, winning the triple jump with a leap of 14.15 meters.
On the women's side, four sprinters highlighted the day with qualifying marks, including
Carly Petney (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) and
Kiah Walton (Burlington, N.J./Burlington) in the 100 meters. Petney finished second overall with a time of 12.55 while Walton came in sixth with a time of 12.77.
Catelyn Hittie (Berlin, Pa. /Berlin Brothersvalley) scored a fifth place finish in the 100 hurdles, crossing the line in 15.62.
Lizzy Cunningham (Hastings, Pa. /Northern Cambria) finished third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:06.53.
Elizabeth Coppella (Bradford, Pa. /Bradford) and
Jennifer Dibert (Mechanicsburg, Pa. /Cumberland Valley) were both qualifiers in the pole vault, finishing second and seventh with heights of 3.50 meters and 3.20 meters, respectively.
West Chester won the women's team title with 121 points. Millersville came in second with 108.50 points and the Crimson Hawks were third with 94 points. On the men's side, Shippensburg took first place with 104 points and West Chester was second with 94.50 while IUP was third with 89.
Other schools competing included Lock Haven, Cheyney, Messiah, Lincoln (Pa.), Franklin & Marshall and Gettysburg.
The Crimson Hawks are back on the track next weekend at Bucknell's Bison Invitational.
