SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Sophomore
Elizabeth Coppella (Bradford, Pa. /Bradford) broke IUP's outdoor pole vault record on Friday as the Crimson Hawks' track & field teams competed at Slippery Rock's Last Chance Meet.
Coppella cleared a height of 3.70 meters (12-01.50), breaking the five-year old record by Shona Young by more than seven inches. Coppella's mark was an NCAA provisional height and is now tied for the third best in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) this season.
Coppella – who also owns IUP's indoor pole vault record - had one of three NCAA provisional marks on the day for IUP, as she was joined by
Jeremy Claypoole (Bellwood, Pa. /Bellwood-Antis) in the triple jump and DJ Horton in the men's pole vault.
Claypoole hit a personal best with a leap of 14.83 meters, besting his previous best by more than a half-meter from last week's Penn Relays. It's also the top mark in the conference this year.
Horton's 4.95 meter height was also a provisional mark, although not his best of the season, he has the top mark in the PSAC this season at 5.10 meters.
Seven other Crimson Hawks had marks good enough for PSAC qualifying on Friday, including
Emily Dubler (Johnsonburg, Pa. /Johnsonburg) in the 100 meters (12.88);
Mayria Branch (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) in the 100 meters (12.89);
Christina Roberson (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Penn Hills) in the 400 meters (59.44);
Kristen Knass (Butler, Pa./Butler) in the triple jump (10.89m);
Julius Rivera (Monroevilla, Pa./Gateway) in the 100 (10.71);
Austin Cooper (King of Prussia, Pa. /Upper Merion ) in the 800 meters (1:54.20); and
Trey North (Westfield, N.Y./Westfield Central) in the long jump (6.77m).
Dubler and North's marks were both career bests.
This was the final meet for the Crimson Hawks before the 2016 PSAC Outdoor Championships May 12-14 in Mansfield.
