INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP swim teams won a combined nine events as the Crimson Hawks wrapped up the second day of the 2016 Pidgeon Memorial Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Pidgeon Natatorium.
Both IUP teams split decisions with Gannon and Bloomsburg in the dual meet scored event. The men defeated Gannon 283-103 and lost to Bloomsburg 216-177, while the women took out Gannon 222-154 and fell to Bloomsburg 202-151.
The women totaled five individual victories and 13 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times in the two sessions on Saturday.
Bria Otwell and
Paige Spradling both tallied a pair of individual wins, with Otwell hitting a Division II B cut time in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:24.85. She also won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:10.11. Spradling picked up her wins in the 400 IM (4:44.15) and 200 breast (2:26.80).
Other individual winners for the women were
Sara Bertram in the 100 butterfly (59.94) and
Taylor Cisik in the 100 backstroke (1:00.98).
The women also had five second place and two third place finishes during the day. Their 200 medley and 800 free relays both came in second while their 400 free relay finished third.
The men totaled 14 top three finishes, including four first place tallies, and had 25 PSAC individual qualifying times on Saturday.
Yuri Fernandes,
Mace Long and
Alex Plimpton each picked up individual victories, with the 800 free relay team also finishing in first place. Fernandes had his win in the 400 IM (4:17.69), while Long won the 200 butterfly (1:56.62) and Plimpton won the 1000 free (10:01.96).
The men had six second place finishes, including their 200 medley and 400 free relay teams, and had four third place finishes.
This was the final competition for the Crimson Hawks before they head to York, Pa. for the 2016 PSAC Championships on Feb. 18-21. Conference meet qualifiers and seeds will be announced in the coming weeks.
