Austin Cooper earns third career PSAC Top 10 honor

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – IUP men's track & field senior Austin Cooper has been named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's (PSAC) Spring Top 10 team, announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office.

Initiated in the 1997-98 academic year, the PSAC Top 10 Awards are designed to recognize student-athletes who excel in both the classroom and in athletic competition. The Top 10 Award is selected by the conference's sports information directors and given to five males and five females in each athletic season: fall, winter and spring.

This is Cooper's third career PSAC Top 10 honor, also earning it in Winter 2018 (indoor track) and Spring 2017 (outdoor track).

Cooper graduated in May with a 3.88 cumulative grade point average with a double major in regional planning and economics. He earned All-Atlantic Region honors in both the 800 and 1500 meters this spring season, and posted three top-five finishes as the PSAC Outdoor Championships – 4x800 relay (first), 1500 (third) and 800 meters (fourth).

Cooper ran the third leg on the winning 4x800 relay team that broke the PSAC Championship meet and IUP outdoor record with a time of 7:39.12, edging East Stroudsburg's squad by just six tenths of a second.

He finished with the second fastest 1500 time (3:51.00) and fifth fastest 800 time (1:52.26) in the Atlantic Region.

Cooper's career accomplishments
Cooper becomes the fourth IUP student-athlete to earn three career PSAC Top 10 honors, joining Sean Strauman (cross country/track & field), Laura Hall (volleyball), and Molly Carr (basketball, softball).

He's also one of 40 student-athletes from the 18 PSAC schools to be named to at least three PSAC Top 10 teams.

Cooper is a 14-time All-Atlantic Region honoree in track & field (eight outdoor, six indoor), a three-time PSAC Outdoor Champion in the 1500 meters, and a two-time all-region cross country runner.

IUP's PSAC Top 10 honors
Cooper joins IUP women's tennis senior Luise von Agris as PSAC Spring Top 10 honorees. They give IUP 56 total top 10 awards since 1997-98, the fourth most in conference history. Shippensburg has 67, Slippery Rock 63, and Clarion 57.

IUP totaled five top 10 awards during the 2017-18 academic year, the second most in the conference (Shippensburg, six).
