IUP Women's Soccer announces 14-member 2020 recruiting class

INDIANA, Pa. - The IUP women' soccer program welcomes 14 members of its 2020 recruiting class, head coach Adel Heder announced Monday. 

The class is comprised of eight recruits from Pennsylvania, two each from Maryland and New York, and one each from Ohio and Virginia.

It includes Grace Albitz (South Park Twp., Pa.), Maia Ferra (Lower Burrell, Pa.), Kristen Finnerty (Melville, N.Y.), Kennedy Fowler (Mechanicsville, Md.), Ashley Grine (Leechburg, Pa.), Danica Johnson (New Kensington, Pa.), Isabella Kakiou (Cortland, Ohio), Rachel Kalkbrenner (Canonsburg, Pa.), Samantha Nemeth (North Huntingdon, Pa.), Rachel Onderko (Poolesville, Md.), Emma Petrie (Williamsville, N.Y.), Hannah Scardina (Indiana, Pa.), Cloë Thoericht (Stewartstown, Pa.) and Kylie Warren (Warrenton, Va.). 

The group will join the Crimson Hawks for the upcoming 2020 fall season, currently scheduled to start Wednesday, September 16 at home against Edinboro. 
 

Grace Albitz | Midfield / Defender | 5-8
South Park Twp., Pa. / South Park HS

Albitz was named all-section and All-WPIAL at South Park ... Four-time section champ ... WPIAL champs and PIAA semifinalist in 2018 ... Part of four state cup championships as member of Century United before moving on to Beadling Soccer Club ... Major: Accounting ... Parents: Rich and Susan Albitz

Heder on Albitz: Grace brings good physicality to the back end. She works hard and is determined to get better each and every day. 
 
Maia Ferra | Center Mid / Defender | 5-4
Lower Burrell, Pa. / Lower Burrell HS

Major: Undecided ... Parents: Brian and Melanie Ferra
 
Ferra: I feel that I will be bringing great vision and a strong technical aspect to the field.
 
Kristen Finnerty | Forward / Midfielder | 
Melville, N.Y. / Walt Whitman HS

Played for two-time New York State Cup Champions ... Team captain at Walt Whitman ... Major: Interior Design ... Parents: Robert and Linda Finnerty

Heder on Finnerty: Kristen will bring constant positivity and a strong work ethic to the team.
 
Kennedy Fowler | Foward/Midfielder | 5-8
Mechanicsville, Md. / Chopticon HS

Second team all-state in Maryland ... Two-time first team all-county ... Two-time Most Outstanding Player ... Michelle Ballengee Sportsmanship Award ... Major: Interior Design with a minor in Business ... Parents: David & Stephanie Fowler
 
Fowler: I think I will bring a strong work ethic to the team this fall.
 
Ashley Grine | Center Mid | 6-0
Leechburg,  Pa. / Leechburg Area HS

Major: Business Administration ... Parents: Melissa and Chris Grine

Grine: I believe I will bring the team a great vision of the field, different technical aspects, and great ball skills.
 
Danica Johnson | Pos: Forward | 5-4
New Kensington, Pa. / Lower Burrell

Two-time All-WPIAL and all-section ... Helped Lower Burrell to section title ... Major: Education ... Parents: Carol Paolo Johnson &  Jay Johnson

Heder on Johnson: Danica's size and offensive ability to score and go forward are her strengths. 
 
Isabella Kakiou | Midfielder | 5-6
Cortland, Ohio / Lakeview HS

Two-time second team All-Ohio (2018, 2019) ... NE8 Player of the Year as a senior ... Three-time All-NE8 selection ... Two-time all-district ... All-County as a sophomore in 2017 ... Major: Nursing ... Parents: Christina and James Kakiou
 
Kakiou: My biggest strength is my on-the-ball decision-making. 
 
Rachel Kalkbrenner | Defender/Midfielder | 5-8
Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon McMillan HS

Played for two-time Pennsylvania State Cup champions ... State Cup regional runner-up and member of 2016 PIAA State Championship team ... Major: Early Childhood/Special Education ... Parents: Jack and Carla

Heder on Kalkbrenner: Rachel always tries to be a total team player and be there for my teammates whether it's on or off the field.
 
Samantha Nemeth | Midfielder/Foward | 5-9
North Huntingdon, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic HS

All-WPIAL and all-section selection ... John Driscoll Scholar-Athlete Award nominee ... Major: Nursing ... Parents: Mark & Bernadette Nemeth 

Nemeth: My strength is strong to goal with a nice shot. I'm a natural goal scorer.
 
Rachel Onderko | Foward/Winger | 5-7
Poolesville, Md. / Poolesville HS 

Won Poolesville's "Falcon Award" ... Team's leading scorer ... US Army "Impact Player of the Month" for November in Maryland 
Major: Nursing ... Parents: Ellen and Joseph Onderko

Onderko: I think I will bring a strong attack mentality that allows me to be successful in finding and finishing opportunities to score, and a sense of urgency and positivity to keep the team uplifted in challenging situations.
 
Emma Petrie / Foward/Striker / 5-6
Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville South HS 

Second team Section 6 All-WNY ... ECIC Division 2 first team ... Major: Biology Pre Med ... Parents: Kristen and Eric Petrie

Petrie: I'm a hard worker and always give 100 percent.
 
Hannah Scardina | Forward | 5-0
Indiana, Pa. / Indiana Area Senior HS

Three-time Team MVP ... Named Most Outstanding Player of the All-WPIAL game in November ... Major: Undecided ... Parents: Brandon and Jessica Scardina

Heder on Scardina: Hannah is fast able to find the back of the net. She'll be a benefit to the team by being able to play anywhere and can work well with anyone.
 
Cloë Thoericht | Midfielder | 5-6
Stewartstown, Pa. / Kennard-Dale HS

Senior All-Star ... Major: Exercise Science ... Parents: Maria Moxley and Chris Thoericht 
 
Heder on Thoericht: Cloë will bring leadership, hard work, dedication, as well as camaraderie to this team. 
  
Kylie Warren | Defender | 5-6
Warrenton, Va. / Kettle Run HS

First team all-conference ... Second team all-region ... Team co-captain ... Major: Early Childhood and Special Education ... Parents: Kristie and Keith Warren 

Warren: My strength is that I have good on-field judgement and I'm consistent of making good choices.
