CLEVELAND, Ohio – IUP swimming & diving continued the theme of the weekend with impressive races across the lineup, capping the final day of the Magnus Cup hosted by Cleveland State on Saturday.
Athanasios Diamantidis continued his stellar season and weekend with another school record, this time coming in the 200 breast. Diamantidis' mark of 1:58.71 was an NCAA B Standard, setting the meet record with his first-place finish and touching the wall before competitors from Canisius, Xavier and others.
For the women,
Paige Mikesell was crowned the 200 fly meet champion, setting an NCAA A Standard in the prelims with her time of 1:58.94. She later won the finals with a time of 1:59.28 for the Hawks. Swimmers that achieve an NCAA A cut earn an automatic selection to the DII championships in March.
Competing primarily against DI programs, IUP finished seventh in the women's standings and eighth overall for the men. The Hawks posted 46 total PSAC Standards with 27 for the women and 19 for the men.
"The team energy was outstanding all weekend," head coach
Chris Villa said. "There were a lot of great performances which should lead to great accomplishments as we move into the latter part of the season."
Thomas McGillan nabbed fourth in the 100 free in 45.80, improving on his previous personal best set last season at the same event. He posted 38 total points for IUP on the weekend.
Rachel Johnson recorded her fifth consecutive NCAA B Standard with her fifth-place finish in the 200 breast (2:19.08).
Erin Moyer was third in the B-Final heat of the same event for the Hawks, touching the wall just behind a pair of Duquesne swimmers in 2:21.77. It marked the second top-20 effort of the weekend for Moyer, while
Allison Brownlee picked up 17 points through four relays and in the diving events.
"Our coaching staff of Coach Stoner, Coach Frederick and Coach Brownlee had all of our student-athletes prepared, and they were able to come away with a lot to be proud of and something to build on," Villa continued.
Alexander Roth was an impact performer for IUP in four relay events, adding a top 20 individual finish over the weekend.
