DETROIT, Mich. – IUP swimming & diving returned to the pool for its first action in the new year, falling in dual action against a talented Wayne State program on Saturday in Detroit. The 25th-ranked women's squad fell, 146-74, while the men's team dropped a 121-87 decision.
Both Wayne State and IUP have looked to coordinate a dual meet for several years, and Saturday was a chance for the Hawks to compete against a quality opponent. Wayne State finished third in last year's GLIAC Championships on the men's side, while the women's program was second in the conference championships.
IUP combined for 11 wins on the morning, which included two individual wins for
Paige Mikesell. Mikesell, who also led off the victorious 400 medley relay, picked up victories in the 200 free (1:55.53) and 100 fly (56.62).
For the men's squad,
Thomas McGillan raced to an individual and relay victory, adding a second place on a productive return to the pool. He bested Wayne State's Casey Dolen in the 100 free with a 47.81. McGillan opened the dual with second in the 50 free (21.31), rounding out his day as the lead leg of the first-place 400 free relay (3:15.61).
Luke Mikesell and
Nicholas Roddy also logged victories for the Hawks, coming in the 500 free (4:52.19) and the 1 mtr dive (272.03).
Rachel Johnson nabbed second in the 200 IM (2:10.17) in addition to her 1:05.41 in the 100 breast.
The Hawks also added first-place finishes in exhibition heats for Wayne State. Saturday snapped an impressive stretch of unbeaten dual meet results for the IUP women, suffering their first loss in dual meet competition since December 2020.
