WARREN, Ohio – IUP men's golf ran out of steam during the final round of stroke play at the 2023 NCAA DII Men's Golf National Championships, finishing the tournament in 17th place following the stroke play portion of the tournament.
IUP finishes the tournament in 17th place overall with a combined team score of 898 following a 306 on Wednesday. Each member of the Crimson Hawk lineup finished over par, missing the match play cut in the program's first tournament appearance since 2014-15.
John Olsen paced the IUP lineup on Wednesday with a one-over 73, concluding a solid debut on the national stage in his first collegiate season, finishing tied for 59th. Olsen bounced back from a pair of bogeys on the back nine with consecutive birdies on holes 15 and 15, closing the round with three consecutive pars.
Shaun Fedor was the top IUP finisher over three rounds in a tie for 53rd, carding a 76 on Wednesday.
Guillermo Salazar struck the ball well, finishing with a tough-luck 78 in the third round. Salazar birdied 14 but closed the round with three straight bogeys.
Jackson Buccigross played his final round of a storied collegiate career at IUP, notching a 79. Buccigross finished the tournament tied for 91st, providing leadership for a young Crimson Hawk lineup throughout the season.
Alex Swinnerton rounded out the IUP finishers with an 81 on Thursday, concluding the tournament tied for 80th overall.
While the final round of stroke play did not go IUP's way, prospects are bright going into next season. IUP will need to replace Buccigross, who graduates following a five-year career. The Crimson Hawks are expected to return the remainder of the lineup, including Fedor for a fifth season in 2023-24.
Simon Fraser won a three-team tiebreaker to claim the eighth and final spot for match play, taking place April 25-26.
