IUP men’s golf cruises to team title at Hannastown Invitational; Swinnerton takes first individually

GREENSBURG, Pa. – IUP men's golf parlayed a stellar second round into a sizable advantage, later fending off a final push from Davis & Elkins and emerging victorious at the Hannastown Invitational, hosted by West Liberty.

Individually, Alex Swinnerton captured his first event win of the fall, continuing what has been an impressive stretch of three tournaments. Swinnerton picked up his fourth collegiate victory on Tuesday, concluding the three-round event with scores of 70, 69 and 69 (-2 overall).

"I'm proud of the effort the team put forth this week," IUP head coach Dan Braun said. "They responded from a challenge that I presented to them early in the second round, carrying that edge throughout the remainder of the tournament."

As a team, IUP carded strong rounds of 288, 279 (-1) and 288 and won the event by five shots. The Crimson Hawks took control with the impressive second round, holding on over the final 18 holes despite a strong finish from D&E.

"Although we still have a lot of work to do, it's always great to win as a team," Braun continued.

Swinnerton's victory (208) was highlighted by an eagle in round two, coming on the par four 16th. He rattled off six birdies over the final 18 holes and needed every one after securing medalist honors by one shot over Wheeling's Robin Duzman (209).

"Very happy to Alex for this victory," Braun added. "He's played well enough to win a few tournaments this season, so it's great to see him break through this week."

West Liberty (865), Pitt-Johnstown (867) and California (Pa.) (870) closed out the top five in the team standings. The team title marks the first tournament victory for IUP since last season's home Spadafora Invitational in April 2023.

Guillermo Salazar moved up one spot to fifth in the individual standings with steady rounds of 70, 71 and 72.

John Olsen just missed out on the top 10 overall, landing 12th individually (71, 72, 72). Ben De Castro posted a three-under 67 in the second round and landed 33rd overall.

Cameron Gerue was 59th and Trevor Todd finished 69th in his collegiate debut for the Crimson Hawks.
