BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – IUP sophomore Asel Calbay continued her impressive run at the ITA Atlantic Regional, defeating the tournament's top two seeds to reach the semifinals and eventually the women's open singles final.
Calbay battled through a three-set match that included a tiebreak, securing the decisive set to earn a spot in the championship match. She will face No. 7 seed Filippa Larsson of the University of Charleston, who advanced after defeating the No. 2 seed in the semifinals.
In a notable twist, Calbay had to overcome teammate Lea Von Kozierowski in a tiebreaking set to reach the semifinals. Ifigeneia Kafka also advanced in singles play but fell to Larsson in the quarterfinals.
In doubles, Von Kozierowski and Calbay, along with Annemiek Sterk and Hanah Beitat, were defeated in the semifinals by the tournament's top two seeded teams.
Calbay is scheduled to compete in the ITA Atlantic Region Women's Open Singles final at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
