ERIE, PA - Five players scored at least two goals, including three by
Corinne Miller (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), but the Crimson Hawks surrendered too many turnovers as Gannon defeated No. 14 IUP 19-13 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's lacrosse matchup on Saturday evening in Erie.
The Crimson Hawks (8-4, 5-3) controlled the game from the start, getting a pair of goals in the first five minutes as
Paige Corathers (Cranberry Twp./Seneca Valley) and
Colleen Berlin (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) threaded the net to put IUP on top 2-0.
Gannon's Kimberly Neagle got one back for the Golden Knights, scoring a goal at the 24:17 mark before the Crimson Hawks netted three straight to take a 5-1 lead with 13:49 left in the first.
Alexa Lodovici (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional),
Becca Vogt (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and
Beth Glasshagel (Coram, NY/Newfield) each scored a goal to help give IUP a four-goal advantage.
The Golden Knights (8-5, 6-2) then went on a 4-0 run over a 7:25 span, tying the game at 5-5 with less than four minutes before half.
Miller scored her first goal of the game at the 3:09 mark to give IUP back its lead, but the Golden Knights scored three in the final two minutes of the half to take an 8-6 lead heading into the break.
Gannon would score the first goal of the second half just 26 seconds in before IUP got one back with Berlin's second of the game to bring the Crimson Hawks deficit back to two at 9-7.
Both teams took their turns scoring back-to-back goals, as Miller and Corathers notched points for the Crimson Hawks, but Gannon took control of the game with a 5-0 run to take a 16-9 lead with 17:25 left in the game.
IUP narrowed the gap to five less than seven minutes later but Gannon's defense turned up the heat in the final minutes, keeping the Crimson Hawks at bay to record the six-goal win.
Neagle and Caitlyn Fisher each scored five goals for Gannon, while Fisher added three assists.
Along with Miller's three goals, she tallied three ground balls, four draw controls and caused two turnovers.
Stephanie Bianco (King of Prussia/Upper Merion), Corathers and Berlin each scored two goals, while Bianco had a game-high nine draw controls and added three ground balls.
Chelsey Hipp (Clarksville, MD/Good Counsel) and Katherine Davis split time in goal for IUP, totaling 11 saves.
The Crimson Hawks return to action on Monday with a non-conference home game against Tiffin, with action set to get underway at 4:00 p.m.
