EAST STROUDSBURG, PA – The Crimson Hawks scored nine of the game's first 11 goals while eight players scored as undefeated IUP beat East Stroudsburg 16-8 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon at Whitenight Field.
The Crimson Hawks improve to 8-0 on the year with the win as they continue to build upon the best start in program history. The eight straight victories tie the school record set last year as IUP is tied for first in the PSAC with a 5-0 league record.
Alex Edwards (Bethlehem/Nazareth) and
Drew Hayden (Gibsonia/Pine Richland) each tallied three goals for the Crimson Hawks, who saw
Alexa Lodovici (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional),
Michelle Zakrzewski (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley),
Colleen Berlin (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) and
Tara Nicholas (Germantown, MD/Northwest) all score two goals apiece. Lodovici and Zakrzewski each added two assists.
Chelsey Hipp (Clarksville, MD/Good Counsel) went the entire way in the net for the Crimson Hawks, tallying four saves in the win.
Lodovici and Zakrzewski made it a 2-0 lead within in the first eight minutes of play before Samantha Weinert put ESU on the board at the 21:02 mark.
IUP then went on to score seven of the next eight goals over an 11:01 span to take a 9-2 lead with under seven minutes to play in the half. The Warriors (1-8, 0-5) added two goals before the break as IUP led 9-4.
The Crimson Hawks would put the game away by the midway point of the second half as they led off the period with six consecutive goals to go on top 15-4 with 16:00 left in the game. Edwards and Hayden each put a pair in the net while Berlin and Zakrzewski added the other scores.
ESU tried to mount a comeback with four consecutive goals but it was too little too late for the Warriors as Brittany Palardy stopped the run with a goal to cap off the scoring as IUP doubled up for the win.
Paige Beierschmitt (Eastampton Township, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) led the defensive effort with nine ground balls and three caused turnovers. As a team the Crimson Hawks forced ESU into 17 turnovers and picked up 32 ground balls.
The Crimson Hawks return home for their next game as they host Slippery Rock (3-5, 1-4) on Tuesday at Miller Stadium.
