No. 15 Women’s Lacrosse Heats Up at Tampa

TAMPA, FL - Drew Hayden (Gibsonia/Pine Richland) scored a career-high six goals and picked up four ground balls as the 15th-ranked IUP women's lacrosse team breezed past Tampa 22-7 on Saturday afternoon.

IUP improves to 2-1 on the season, winning its second straight game while Tampa falls to 2-6.

The Crimson Hawks' lauded defense came up big, coming up with 15 caused turnovers as Tampa turned the ball over 31 times and got off just 20 shots.

Three of Hayden's six goals came as free positions, scoring four total goals in the first half as the Crimson Hawks took a 14-3 halftime lead.

It was a 2-2 game in the first five minutes until the Crimson Hawks broke the contest open early, rattling off nine consecutive goals over a 17:03 span to take an 11-2 lead with under eight minutes to play in the half. Hayden scored three of her goals on the run while Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) added three of her own.

Tampa stopped the bleeding but the Crimson Hawks scored three more time before the half, including a goal by Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley) with one second left, to take that 11-point lead into the break.

After a Tampa goal to start the second half, IUP responded with five in a row, with Hayden, Hooven and Alex Edwards (Bethlehem/Nazareth) each getting into the action to put the Crimson Hawks on top 19-4 with 12:38 to go. IUP picked up goals from Hooven, Jamie Nicholson (Middletown, MD/Tuscarora), and Kiera Huntsman (Elverson/Kimberton) down the stretch to close out the 15-goal win.

Hooven finished with five goals while Weinberg had three goals and two assists.

Taylor Norwood (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) led the defensive charge with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. She also had four draw controls on the day. Sarah Ward (Murrysville/Franklin Regional ), Lauren Gibson (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) and Hayden each added two caused turnovers.

Three goalies split time for the Crimson Hawks, combining for seven saves in the net. Katie Davis (Owings Mills, MD/Mercy) got the start while Sarah Knotts (Mount Airy, MD/Linganore) and Chelsea Hipp each played about 20 minutes.

The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Tuesday when they play 10th-ranked Florida Southern in Lakeland.
