No. 15 Women’s Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker to No. 7 Florida Southern

LAKELAND, FL – Three different players scored three goals each for IUP but six straight goals by Florida Southern to end the game gave the seventh-ranked team a 16-15 victory over the 15th-ranked Crimson Hawks on Tuesday night.

Those six Florida Southern goals came in the last 2:42, including the game-winner with just one second left on the clock.

The loss dropped the Crimson Hawks to an even 2-2 on the year while the Moccasins improved to 7-1 overall.

Michelle Zakrzewski (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley), Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley) and Drew Hayden (Gibsonia/Pine Richland) all scored three goals for the Crimson Hawks, who fall to an even 2-2 on the year with the loss. The Moccasins improve to 7-1 overall.

Brittney Palardy (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall) and Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) each scored twice, while Weinberg added four assists on the night.

The Crimson Hawks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with goals by Weinberg, Hooven and Zakrzewski. Florida Southern picked up two straight goals but tallies by Palardy and Hayden gave IUP 5-2 lead with 13:39 to play in the first half.

Florida Southern closed out the half with a pair of goals as IUP took a 5-4 lead into the break.

The Moccasins picked up right where they left off in the beginning of the second half, scoring the first two goals to take a 6-5 lead. Palardy stopped the run and tied the game with her second goal of the night before Sarah Ward (Murrysville/Franklin Regional ) put the Crimson Hawks back on top with a goal at the 27:32 mark.

The game would be tied again 1:30 later with another Florida Southern goal before IUP reeled off four straight to take an 11-7 lead with 18:40 left.

The two teams would trade goals, with the Crimson Hawks getting one from Hooven to go on top 15-10 with three minutes to go. 18 seconds later the Moccasins started their run, getting goals at 2:42, 2:31, 1:51, 1:31 and :45 before the game-winner

Defensively, Taylor Norwood (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) and Palardy each had three caused turnovers. Palardy added five ground balls while Norwood had four and three draw controls. Hooven had a game-high six ground balls with Hayden adding five and Alex Edwards (Bethlehem/Nazareth) picking up four draw controls. Katie Davis (Owings Mills, MD/Mercy) had eight saves in the net for IUP.

The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Thursday as they face eighth-ranked Rollins (5-1) in Winter Park.
