WINTER PARK, FL – The 15th-ranked Crimson Hawks scored 12 first half goals en route to a 16-14 victory over No. 8 Rollins in a nationally-ranked women's lacrosse matchup on Thursday night in Florida.
Seven different players got on the score sheet in the first half, leading the team to a 12-8 lead at the break.
Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) got things going for IUP, scoring the game's first two goals in less than four minutes of play to give IUP the early 2-0 advantage.
Brittney Palardy (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall) and
Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley) would make it 4-0 IUP through just over six minutes of play.
The eighth-ranked Tars battled hard scoring three unanswered goals to pull within one of the Crimson Hawks' lead at the 22:17 minute mark.
The two teams would exchange goals, with Rollins tying the game at 5-5 with 15:26 remaining in the first half.
The Crimson Hawks regained the lead, following another goal from Weinberg that sent IUP on an offensive explosion, scoring five straight goals and taking a five-goal advantage with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half.
Both teams kept the pressure on for the remainder of the half, and the Crimson Hawks were able to take the four-goal advantage into the break.
The second half was a more defensive battle, as the Crimson Hawks fought to keep ahold of their lead.
A goal from Rollins' Tyler Thomas pulled the Tars within three with just under 20 minutes to go, but the IUP defense came up strong, holding Rollins off the scoresheet for a remainder of the half.
On offense, Hooven and
Alex Edwards (Bethlehem/Nazareth) added two quick goals to regain the five-goal advantage with 7:59 remaining in the game.
But the nation's eighth-ranked team wouldn't go quietly, scoring three unanswered goals over a minute and a half of play to cut the IUP lead to just two.
Weinberg capped off her stellar night with a goal at the 1:22 minute mark and the Crimson Hawks would surrender just one more to the Tars before claiming the 16-14 upset victory.
On the night, Weinberg and Hooven each finished with four goals, with Weinberg adding two assists, one ground ball and two draw controls.
Hooven was spectatuclar on both sides of the ball, recording four goals, one assist, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Palardy added three of the team's 16 goals, also contributing one ground ball, one caused turnover and two draw controls.
Edwards also had a solid outing, finishing the night with two goals, one assist, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls.
On defense,
Taylor Norwood (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) led the Crimson Hawks with four ground balls, four caused turnovers and four draw controls. Norwood is third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in caused turnovers per game, averaging 2.8 and sixth in ground balls per game, averaging 3.4.
In goal,
Katie Davis (Owings Mills, MD/Mercy) played all 60 minutes, recording 11 saves.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 3-2 on the season. They'll return home to face the nation's fourth-ranked team in the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven on Sunday in a 1 p.m. matchup from Miller Stadium.
