Drew Hayden (Gibsonia/Pine Richland) scored five goals for the second straight game and IUP allowed just 12 shots all game as the eighth-ranked Crimson Hawks flew past Gannon 18-8 in snowy conditions on Tuesday evening in Erie.
The Crimson Hawks improve to 5-2 overall on the season and are alone atop the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with a perfect 3-0 league mark. Gannon falls to 4-3 and 1-1.
IUP attacked early and often to start the game, scoring seven times in the first 10 minutes of action. Four different players scored during the opening run, with
Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley),
Sarah Ward (Murrysville/Franklin Regional ) and Brittany Palardy each netting two apiece.
Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) assisted on three of those goals while Ward dished out two more assists.
The Golden Knights managed just two goals in the opening half, with the first one coming after nearly 17 minutes played. The Crimson Hawks allowed just four shots to Gannon in the opening half while putting up a total of 22 themselves.
IUP scored five more times in the half, including four straight with under eight minutes to go to take a 12-2 lead into the break. Hayden had her fourth hat trick of the season by halftime, scoring three goals with one assist in the first 30 minutes.
The Crimson Hawks scored four of the first five goals to start the second half to take a huge 16-3 lead with 14:16 to go on a running clock. Gannon added five straight goals but Hayden and
Michelle Zakrzewski (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley) tacked on goals at the end to make it a 10-point differential.
Taylor Norwood (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) helped give the Crimson Hawks plenty of possession time, gathering six of the team's 15 draw controls. She also had five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Weinberg added five draw controls and had caused two turnovers. Hayden had six ground balls while
Alex Edwards (Bethlehem/Nazareth) had four and Ward and
Kiera Huntsman (Elverson/Kimberton) each added three.
All three IUP goalies saw time in the net, with
Chelsey Hipp (Clarksville, MD/Good Counsel) playing in the last 26 minutes and notching three saves.
Katie Davis (Owings Mills, MD/Mercy) got the start and the win while her and
Sarah Knotts (Mount Airy, MD/Linganore) combined to allow three goals in more than 34 minutes.
It was also the Crimson Hawks third consecutive victory and they'll look for their fourth straight on Friday in Millersville (4-2, 1-1). Game time is set for 4 p.m.
