No. 15 Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to No. 13 Lindenwood

INDIANA, PA – A strong second half offensive performance by 13th-ranked Lindendwood was too much for 15th-ranked IUP as the Crimson Hawks lost 18-11 in their 2014 season opener on Sunday afternoon at Miller Stadium.

The Lady Lions outscored IUP 12-6 in the second half after holding onto a 6-5 lead at the half. They improve to 4-1 on the season.

Playing in her first collegiate game, Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley) scored four goals for the Crimson Hawks while also picking up a ground ball and causing a turnover. Alex Edwards (Bethlehem/Nazareth) and Drew Hayden (Gibsonia/Pine Richland) each scored two goals for IUP.

The Crimson Hawks held an early 2-1 lead after back-to-back goals by Edwards and Sarah Ward (Murrysville/Franklin Regional ). Two straight goals by the Lady Lions put them on top 3-2 before three consecutive goals by Melissa Smith put Lindenwood on top 6-3 with 5:08 to go before the break.

IUP narrowed the gap to one going into halftime, with Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) assisting on goals by Brittney Palardy (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall) and Hooven.

The two teams would trade goals to start the second half, with Lindwood holding an 8-7 lead after another goal by Hooven with 26:26 to go. The Lady Lions then made their run, scoring five straight goals over a 9:46 span to take a 13-7 lead with 14:27 to go. Hooven's third goal stopped the bleeding at the 14:12 mark, but the Lady Lions went on to score five of the last eight goals as they finished with the seven-goal win.

Weinberg finished with three assists on the day for the Crimson Hawks. Defensively, Palardy and Paige Beierschmitt (Eastampton Township, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) each caused two turnovers, while Beierschmitt, Hayden and Brenna Gallagher (Evans City/Seneca Valley) all had two ground balls apiece. Katie Davis (Owings Mills, MD/Mercy) got the start in the net and saved 10 shots while coming up with four ground balls in 47 minutes of action.

The Crimson Hawks will play their next four games away from Indiana, starting with their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday at Seton Hill. They'll also play Tampa, Florida Southern and Rollins during their spring break trip to Florida.
