Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) broke the single season school record for assists and
Drew Hayden (Gibsonia/Pine Richland) scored five goals as 11
th-ranked IUP defeated Bloomsburg 14-9 in its regular season women's lacrosse finale on Wednesday afternoon.
With four assists today, Weinberg brings her season total to 49 assists, breaking the old record held by Becca Vogt (2011) and
Alexa Lodovici (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) (2013). She has six three-assist games this season, including a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record 11 against East Stroudsburg back on April 5.
The Crimson Hawks finished the regular season with a 12-4 overall record and a 10-2 mark in the PSAC. They'll head into next week's conference tournament as the three seed and will host either West Chester or Bloomsburg in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The Huskies fall to 8-7 overall and 6-5 in the conference with one game left to play. They'll battle with West Chester for the fifth seed in the conference tournament.
Hayden extended her single season goal record to 61 and added two assists for her sixth six-point game in the last seven contests. She broke the school record of 55 goals in a season last Saturday against West Chester and now has a total of 80 points in 16 games this season. She also had nine five-goal games this year.
Bloomsburg scored three of the game's first four goals to take a 3-1 lead less than eight minutes in. Weinberg's new school record came on the very next goal as she found a cutting
Michelle Zakrzewski (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley) at the 20:52 mark of the first half.
The was the first of four straight goals for the Crimson Hawks as they took at 5-3 lead midway through the first half. The Huskies then netted two goals in the last 8:43 as IUP took a 6-5 lead into the break.
Bloomsburg tied the game twice in the second half, first at 6-6 and then again at 8-8 before Hayden led a 5-0 run as the Crimson Hawks took a 13-8 lead with under seven minutes to play. Hayden scored three goals on the run, including back-to-back goals 49 seconds apart.
The two teams traded goals in the last 2:32 but IUP's lead was too much for the Huskies to overcome.
Weinberg, Zakrzewski,
Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley) and
Brittney Palardy (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall) each scored twice while
Sarah Ward (Murrysville/Franklin Regional ) added another goal for the Crimson Hawks.
Zakrzewski also picked up five grounds balls while
Katie Davis (Owings Mills, MD/Mercy) had four and Weinberg and
Brenna Gallagher (Evans City/Seneca Valley) each had two.
Taylor Norwood (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly), along with Gallagher, caused three turnovers and also had three draw controls. Davis played all 60 minutes in the net, saving six shots.
IUP (third) and Seton Hill (fourth) are the only two teams who have wrapped up seeds in next week's tournament. Lock Haven and Mercyhurst are still battling it out for the top spot while West Chester and Bloomsburg are going for the fifth seed.
