Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) set a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's lacrosse single game record with 11 assists as the seventh-ranked Crimson Hawks handled East Stroudsburg 27-11 on Saturday afternoon at Miller Stadium.
Weinberg had broken the school record of six in the first half as she racked up seven in the game's first 30 minutes. The 11 is also the third highest total in NCAA Division II history with the record of 13 held by Alexandria Quast of Tiffin on April 5, 2013.
The Crimson Hawks also set a team record with 19 assists, breaking the old record of 14, which was achieved on five different occasions.
It was IUP's sixth consecutive victory as the Crimson Hawks improve to 8-2 overall on the year and 6-0 in the PSAC. It was also their third consecutive game with 20 goals, outscoring opponents a combined 69-23 during that span. East Stroudsburg is on the opposite end of a streak as it was the Warriors fourth consecutive loss, falling to 6-4 and 1-4.
The Crimson Hawks scored two goals before ESU even touched the ball, with freshman
Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley) netting both in the first 50 seconds of the game. Hooven picked up her sixth hat-trick of the season just 41 seconds later to put IUP on top 3-0 at the 28:29 mark.
The scoring barrage continued for IUP as the Crimson Hawks scored 10 times in the game's first 8:16 without the Warriors even getting a shot off. After an ESU made it 10-1, the Crimson Hawks responded with a 7-0 run before eventually taking an 18-4 lead into halftime.
Eight different players scored in the first half for the Crimson Hawks, with Hooven and
Drew Hayden (Gibsonia/Pine Richland) each netting four while
Sarah Ward (Murrysville/Franklin Regional ) added three. Weinberg's IUP record breaking assist came with 9:43 left before the half on a goal by
Michelle Zakrzewski (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley) to give the Crimson Hawks a 17-1 lead.
The Warriors scored three of the first four goals to start the second half to make it a 12-goal game, but IUP kept up the scoring intensity to earn the 16-goal victory.
In all, 11 IUP players scored, including six who scored multiple times. Hooven and Hayden each scored five goals while Ward finished with four and Zakrzewski and
Lillienne Kane (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) both scoring three.
Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) scored a pair and
Alex Edwards (Bethlehem/Nazareth),
Brittney Palardy (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall), Weinberg,
Brenna Gallagher (Evans City/Seneca Valley) and
Jamie Nicholson (Middletown, MD/Tuscarora) all had one goal.
Three goalies saw action in the net for the Crimson Hawks, with
Katie Davis (Owings Mills, MD/Mercy) starting and going the first 17:32.
Sarah Knotts (Mount Airy, MD/Linganore) played just over 16 minutes and
Chelsey Hipp (Clarksville, MD/Good Counsel) played 26. The trio combined for three saves.
The defense also played a big part in helping the Crimson Hawks get out to the big first half lead, causing 14 turnovers and picking up 20 ground balls. Gallagher finished with a season-high four caused turnovers to go along with four ground balls.
Taylor Norwood (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) forced three turnovers and
Paige Beierschmitt (Eastampton Township, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) added two with three ground balls.
In addition to her 11 assists, Weinberg had a career-high eight draw controls, helping the Crimson Hawks gain possession early. Norwood added six while Edwards had three.
The 27 goals were one short of tying a program single game record. IUP scored 28 against rival Slippery Rock back on March 31, 2007.
They will hit the road for the next two games, heading to Slippery Rock to play under the lights on Tuesday before playing at Kutztown next Saturday.
