ResultsCHARLESTON, WV – Three top 10 finishes led the Crimson Hawks men's golf team to a first place finish in the NCAA Men's Atlantic/East Region Championship hosted at the Edgewood Country Club.
The Crimson Hawks finished with a six-stroke advantage over second place St. Thomas Aquinas and 16 strokes over Adelphi and the University of Charleston who finished in a tie for third place and punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships.
Zack Kempa (Brantford, ON/Assumption College School) led the way for IUP, finishing the three-day tournament with an even 213. The senior shot a three-under 68 in day one and followed that up with a one-under 70 and a four-over 75 in days two and three. This is the second straight top three finish for Kempa who won the tournament last season.
Finishing in a tie for fourth place was
Jack Owen (Hampshire, U.K./Brockenhurst College) who recorded a one-under 70 to finish the tournament at a one-over 214. Owen started the tournament with a four-over 75 but wrapped up day two with a two-under 69.
In a tie for seventh place was Kenneth Sames, who wrapped up the event with a three-over 216. After shooting a four-over 75 in day one, Sames shot an astounding five-under 66 in day two and followed that up with another four-over 75 in the final day of competition.
Max Kirsch (Ebensburg, Pa. /Central Cambria) also finished the tournament in the top 20, in a five-way tie for 19
th place. Finishing with a seven-over 220, Kirsch shot a 76, 69 and 75 respectively in the three-day event.
This is the fourth regional victory in the last seven years for the Crimson Hawks. They have finished first or second in each of the last eight seasons, including victories in 2014, 2013, 2009 and 2008.
With the win, they'll advance to nationals, competing against the top 20 teams in the nation at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich. This will be IUP's 32
nd NCAA championship appearance.
