DANIELS, W.Va. – The IUP men's golf team sits one stroke back of the overall lead after Monday's opening round of the 2018 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Region Championships at The Resort at Glade Springs Cobb Course.
The Crimson Hawks are in a three-way tie for second place out of 20 teams after shooting a three-over par 291 in the first round. St. Thomas Aquinas owns the overall lead with a two-over 290, and IUP is tied with West Liberty and Franklin Pierce.

Leading the way for IUP is senior
Michael Hoare (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), who is one stroke back of the individual lead with a two-under 70. He's one of five players tied for third overall, trailing Mercyhurst's Harison Laskey and Wilmington's Ryan Rucinski (69) for the lead.
Hoare tallied three birdies and just one bogey Monday, heading into the turn with an even-par 36. He had two of his birdies on the back nine, including one on the 501-yard par five 12th hole.
Matt Cocorikis (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) and
Jeremy Eckenrode (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) are each in the top 20 after the opening round, tied for 17th with a one-over 73. They both played consistent golf, with a combined 32 pars and just three bogies. Nathan Guerrini is tied for 39th with a three-over 75, finishing strong with three birdies on his final four holes.
Joshua Bartley (Valencia, Pa./Mars) shot a nine-over 81.
Second round play
After having an afternoon tee time in the first round, the Crimson Hawks begin the second round at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. Third round tee times will be based on the leaderboard.
