IUP wins fourth straight and record 32nd PSAC Championship

LEBANON, Pa. -- The IUP men's golf team won a record 32nd Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship, leading all three rounds and capturing the 2022 trophy on Sunday at Iron Valley Golf Club.

Guillermo Salazar captured medalist honors for the tournament for IUP, which won its fourth-straight conference crown. He carded a three-under 69 in the final round for a 217, winning the individual by one stroke against Gannon's Abe Holmes (218).

Salazar is IUP's 18th PSAC individual champion since 1993 and the 11th since 2007. He was stellar through the front nine on Sunday, posting a five-under at the turn before recording a two-over 38 on the back nine.

The conference title was also the fourth in as many seasons for head coach Dan Braun, whose lineup featured four golfers inside the top 10 overall. IUP won its fifth title in the last seven seasons on Sunday, while the record 32nd conference championship are by far the most of any PSAC school. Slippery Rock, which doesn't have a men's golf team anymore, has 14, Clarion eight, West Chester five, Millersville four, with four other schools winning one each.

The Crimson Hawks led from the start of the tournament, opening up an eight-stroke lead after the first round before expanding it to 10 strokes in the second round over second-place Gannon.

Shaun Fedor and Alex Swinnerton each tied for third in the tournament with scores of 220. Fedor notched a two-over 74 on Sunday, while Swinnerton posted a 75. Jackson Buccigross finished tied for eighth with a 77 on Sunday, good for a total score of 226.

Fedor was also named the PSAC Champion Scholar in the awards presentation following the tournament.

John Olsen finished the tournament tied for 28th, carding an 81 in the final round.

Overall, the Crimson Hawks led the field with 46 combined birdies through the tournament. As a team, IUP logged a -10 on par fives, posting a scoring average of 4.83 on those holes. Salazar was a combined five-under on par fives for the tournament, going two-under on par threes.

The conference championship clinches a berth in the 2023 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Region Championships for the Crimson Hawks. The appearance will be the 26th in program history, a region record.
