INDIANA, Pa. - The IUP women's lacrosse program had seven players earn all-league honors as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) announced its 2022 postseason awards for the sport Monday afternoon.
The seven selections was the most of any school in the Western Division, tied for the most in the entire conference, and was a new program record.
IUP had three first team selections, including midfielder
Sarah Reustle and defenders
Hannah Sharkey and
Maggie Marsteller. Four Crimson Hawks landed on the second team, including attackers
Chloe Borland and
Jordan Kulp, midfielder
Emme Mass, and defender
Sami Shutt. Six of the seven selections have junior eligibility or younger.
Three first team selections most since 2015
Reustle and Sharkey, both sophomores, are first team selections after earning second team honors as true freshmen a year ago.
Reustle, who was named the team's MVP over the weekend, is among the PSAC leaders ground balls per game (2.53) and caused turnovers per game (1.76), both team-bests. She's also a force on the draw (3.47/game) and has 30 points on the year. Contributing mostly on the defensive end early in the season, she was given more offensive opportunities late in the year and tallied 20 goals with four assists over the last six games. Reustle earned PSAC West Athlete and Defensive Athlete of the Week honors this season.
Sharkey tied with Reustle for the team-lead with 30 caused turnovers (1.76/game) and also finished third on the team with 37 ground balls (2.17/game). A PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week pick from earlier in the season, Sharkey forced a turnover in 14 of 17 games, including 2+ caused TOs in 10 games.
Marsteller, a junior, is a first time selection in her second year as a starter. One of seven players to start all 17 games in the regular season, she was second on the team with 39 ground balls (2.29/game) and third in caused turnovers with 23 (1.35/game). Marsteller caused a turnover in 13 games, including two or more nine times.
Hawks led the way in second team picks
IUP's four second team selections were the most in the conference. It was also the most second/third team picks in program history.
This is the second All-PSAC honor for Kulp, a junior, who earned first team honors last season. She's currently fourth in the league with 2.59 assists per game, posting 44 in 17 starts, with her 44 assists the sixth-most in IUP single season history. Her 63 points also lead the team. Kulp has eight outings of 5+ points, including a season-best seven against Shippensburg where she dished out six assists.
Borland, a senior and first time pick, has been enjoying a successful return from a season-ending injury to post 54 points in 15 games. She's second on the team with 29 assists and ranks third with 25 goals. Borland has some of the biggest games of her career this year, including an 8-point effort against Bloomsburg and a 7-point outing at Gannon where she scored five goals.
Mass stood out as a true freshman, starting 16 of her 17 games played. She's fifth on the team with 21 goals and seventh with 25 points, boasting a successful 8-for-11 in free position attempts. Mass was also fourth with 25 draw controls.
Shutt earns her first award in her first year as a full-time starter. The junior started all 17 games and finished fourth on the team in both caused turnovers with 21 and ground balls with 31. She had career-bests of eight ground balls and four caused turnovers at Seton Hill.
PSAC postseason awards
A combined 26 first and second team PSAC West honors were handed out Monday. In addition to the seven all-league selections,
Brenna Gallagher Roan was named PSAC West Coach of the Year.
