Hawks conclude second round in 14th at 2023 NCAA DII National Championships

WARREN, Ohio – IUP men's golf shot two shots better as a team on Tuesday but could not move up the team standings on an impressive day for the field at the 2023 NCAA DII Men's Golf National Championships at Avalon Lakes in Ohio.

The Crimson Hawks carded a 295 (+7) on Tuesday, slipping three spots to 14th place after two rounds.

Despite a solid round, the Crimson Hawks were unable to keep pace with the loaded national field on a low day of scoring across the board. IUP heads into the final day of stroke play 11 shots from eighth place, currently a three-way tie for sixth, and the eventual cut line.

Oklahoma Christian dazzled on Tuesday and vaulted into the lead after 36 holes (563), placing every player in the lineup under par for a combined 277 (-11) during the second round.

Sixth-ranked Nova Southeastern, in a pairing with IUP during the initial two rounds, climbed eight spots to inside the cutline as part of the three-way tie for sixth following a 283 (-5) score. Chico State was just one over par as a team (289), finishing the second round in 17th place.

Jackson Buccigross responded in round two with a one-under 71. After starting the round with a double bogey, Buccigross rattled off three consecutive birdies, playing the front nine at one under. Through two rounds, Buccigross is tied for 78th with a combined score of 153.

Alex Swinnerton posted a two-over 74 on Tuesday, bringing his two-round total to 148 and a tie for 47th. Swinnerton carded the lone eagle for IUP in the tournament, coming on the par-five 11th hole. He mixed in four birdies, two double bogeys and four bogeys on the day. IUP is one of 11 teams in the tournament field with an eagle at the 2023 national championships.

Guillermo Salazar and John Olsen mimicked scored again on Tuesday, posting identical three-over tallies of 75, tied for 66th overall. Olsen was consistent throughout the round, beginning with eight consecutive pars, along with a birdie on the par-five 14th.

Meanwhile, Salazar notched four birdies, including consecutive on holes five and six to work his score even.

Shaun Fedor settled in on the back nine on Tuesday, finishing with a four-over 76. Fedor was four over through the front nine, playing the back nine even to finish out the round, slotting tied for 40th.
