As if it weren’t impressive enough to become a repeat champion in a sport held during the sweltering summer months, to also earn a national championship in a sport dependent on snow and ice sounds improbable.  Yet that’s exactly what Brian Spickler has done.

A member of the IUP Track and Field team as a decathlon athlete, Spickler earned honors as two-time PSAC Champion—Decathlon and a one-time PSAC Champion—4 x 100 Meter Relay, two-time NCAA All-American—Decathlon, 1997 PSAC Championships Most Valuable Athlete, 1997 PSAC Athlete of the Year, and ECAC Scholar Athlete of the Year.  Spickler still holds the PSAC outdoor championships meet record in decathlon, set in 1997.  As a coach, he has led teams to 47 conference championships, with 25 NCAA All-Americans, and earned one NCAA National Championship.  As a member of USA Track and Field, he holds the Keystone State Games record in the decathlon and took 11th place in the USATF Indoor National Championships.

In 2007, Spickler won the national championship as the push athlete on the USA 4-Man Bobsled team.

The native of Boothwyn, PA, attended Chichester High School.  At IUP, he earned both a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 1998, as well as a master’s degree in sport management in 2002.  He lives in Denver, CO, with his wife, Emily, and their two children, Grace and Scott.
