IUP Athletic Hall of Fame
After the final year of her fabulous swimming career, Janice Clarkson-Dagney held claim to seven individual records and was a member of three record setting relay teams.
Clarkson, who graduated from Connellsville High School in 1986, earned three letters during her stellar career at IUP from 1987-90 after transferring from West Virginia University.
Her first year on the Indians' squad was also the first year at IUP for Coach Frances Nee, who is now the school's Associate Director of Athletics.
That year, Nee led a resurgence in the IUP swimming program as 15 school records were broken. Clarkson put her name to eight of those records. Six came in individual events, including the I00-, 200-, 500-, I000-, and 1650-yard freestyles and the 200-yard butterfly.
In the 1988-89 season, Clarkson put on a great performance at the Buffalo Invitational. There she broke her own record in the 1,650-yard freestyle by more than 24 seconds, and her time of 5 minutes, 8.32 seconds in the 500-yard freestyle qualified her for the NCAA Division II Meet. She broke her own school record by 4.5 seconds while becoming the only Indian to qualify for nationals that year.
Before her second season was through, Clarkson had broken her own records in the 200-yard freestyle and butterfly while being a part of record setting relay teams in the 400-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. Clarkson captured the record in the 100-yard butterfly for the first time that year.
At the PSAC Meet in 1990, Clarkson was a part of two school record setting teams in the 400-yard free relay and the 400-yard medley relay. IUP finished fourth as a team at the PSAC meet, and Clarkson tied for fifth individually by scoring 39 points by herself.
Her 3.26 grade point average in elementary education helped IUP earn a spot on the All-Academic team as decided by the College Swimming Coaches of America. The Indians were given that honor three straight years, and their team GPA of 3.05 in the spring of 1990 was second in the nation among Division II schools.
Clarkson was the swim coach at Oxford Area High School from 1998-2002 and is currently the director of the Our Lady of Consolation Early Learning Center and Kindergarten in Parkesburg.
Clarkson and her husband Joseph are the parents of Jacob, Jaycee and Jarod. She is also stepmother to Jamie.
