A four-year letter winner at IUP, Murray had a career batting average of .401 during his time with the Indians. He was named to the All-PSAC West first team from 1996-1998 and was the PSAC West Player of the Year in 1998.
 
Murray was also a member of the ECAC south All-Star team in 1996 and 1997, and is seventh in IUP history in runs batted in with 101. After graduation, Murray tought social studies at his alma mater, Governor Mifflin.
 
Murray was named the Mifflin head baseball coach in 2006 and was hired as the high school’s Assistant Principal this year.
 
Steve and his wife Kate are parents to Carla and Joe Murray.
