Most inductees into the IUP Athletic Hall of Fame have four years of experience from which to rack up their impressive achievements in performance and leadership. Then there’s Ron Peters, who did it in half that time.

A transfer student to IUP, Peters played both guard and linebacker on the 1961 and 1962 football teams, averaging 56 minutes of playing time each game. In 1962, he also was named defensive captain by his teammates. Once his eligibility had expired in 1963, he coached the IUP defensive team. In his two years of playing, Peters also played third base on the IUP baseball team and served as team co-captain in 1963.

Now retired, Peters served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1964 through 1971, earning numerous combat decorations for valor in Vietnam. He also managed and coached the USMC West-Pac baseball team, based in Honolulu, HI. His civic career included serving as member of the Akron, OH, Junior Chamber of Commerce from 1971 through 1977.

Peters lives in Oxford, PA, with his wife, Andrea. They have two grown children, Kip and Jodi.
