IUP Athletic Hall of Fame
Gregg Schmidt joins this Hall of Fame class after being a force to be reckoned with on the football field. Schmidt was on one of the stingiest defenses IUP has ever seen, as they only conceded 65.9 yards per game, and only allowed 593 yards all season.
As a senior co-captain in 1977, Schmidt set a program record with 177 total tackles, a mark that helped him earn AP All-American honors and still sits atop the school record books.Â
During his time at IUP, the linebacker was a three-time All-PSAC West selection, an NAIA all-district pick twice, and was a Pittsburgh Press all-district honoree during that record-setting senior season. Schmidt was also named to IUP’s all-time team.Â
Schmidt and his wife Sharon have three daughters, Julia, Jocelyn and Emma. He is the assistant treasurer at US Steel and currently resides in Pittsburgh.
